VMS Software, Inc. announces a new TCP/IP networking stack for its O/S.

Dear VSI OpenVMS Customer,

VMS Software, Inc. (VSI) is pleased to introduce our new networking stack, VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS Version 10.6, which is based on Process Software’s MultiNet for OpenVMS product. Owned and built by VSI, this new networking stack is supported on VSI OpenVMS Integrity Version 8.4-2L1. VSI Engineering plans to release new versions of the VSI TCP/IP stack approximately every 6-9 months with continued improvements to product quality and additional feature content.

VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS Version 10.6 includes the following features:

  • VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS is a standalone product, installable and supported on VSI’s OpenVMS Integrity V8.4-2L1 operating system.
  • VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS product usage is enabled by the VSI OpenVMS Integrity BOE or HA-OE license; no additional license is required.
  • VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS has been engineered to co-exist on an HPE Integrity server system disk that contains other network stacks.
  • When other network stacks are present on the system disk, VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS software allows you to select the stack you prefer, switch to your chosen stack, and then switch back again, if desired. The command procedure SYS$MANAGER:IP$SET_STACK allows you to switch between VSI TCP/IP, TCP/IP Services, MultiNet, or TCPware without having to modify your system startup procedure each time. It does not install or remove any product on your system.
  • VSI TCP/IP’s SSH provides modern ciphers through the inclusion of the Suite B-compliant implementation of the Secure Shell Transport Layer Protocol and the Secure Shell Authentication Protocol.
  • Users who are familiar with the MultiNet for OpenVMS networking stack will be able to set up and configure VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS using tools that look and feel like those provided by MultiNet.

VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS Version 10.6 Enhancements

In Version 10.6, VSI has enhanced VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS in the following ways:

  • IP$EXAMPLES contain updated programs that demonstrate aspects of network programming that users might find helpful.
  • If you are a MultiNet user, you can import and convert your existing MultiNet configuration files to be used by VSI TCP/IP. Conversion can be done during or after installation of VSI TCP/IP and all instances of MultiNet configuration files will be copied and converted for use. When you start VSI TCP/IP after conversion, your networking environment will be the same as when you were running MultiNet. Refer to the VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS Version 10.6 Installation, Upgrade, and Quick Start Guide for additional details.
  • SNMP supports interrogation of MIBs. Please refer to the VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS Version 10.6 Release Notes for a list of MIBs that are supported. Support for additional MIBs will be added in a future release of VSI TCP/IP.
  • SSH supports the following new key exchange (KEX) algorithms:

  • SSH Port Forwarding and OpenVMS Captive Users
SSH implements a user group, known internally by SSH, which designates the users of captive accounts. This group, IP$SSH_CAPTIVE_USERS, gives the system administrator a method by which to specify captive users in various aspects of SSH configuration without requiring definition and management of OpenVMS rights identifiers. Additionally, the supplied SSH configuration template, SSHD2_CONFIG.TEMPLATE, disables port forwarding for captive users by default.

To enable the SSH port forwarding feature for captive users, remove the line “DenyTcpForwardingForGroups” from the SSHD2_CONFIG.CONF, which can be found in SYS$SPECIFIC:[IP.CONFIG.SSH2].

  • VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS V10.6 has been updated to BIND 9 version 9.11.8 which contains CVE fixes. Additional information on the contents of BIND 9.11.8 may be found at:

One aspect of release planning is identification of obsolete features and services that are no longer used by modern TCP/IP stacks. To that end, in VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS V10.6 we have removed or deprecated a number of commands and services.

Please refer to the VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS Version 10.6 Release Notes for descriptions of these items which include:
  • Interfaces no longer supported
  • Commands no longer supported
  • Commands and services not present

Please refer to the VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS Version 10.6 Release Notes, as well as other VSI TCP/IP documents, for more information about enhancements and other features of VSI TCP/IP for OpenVMS V10.6.

The Release Notes are included in the kit download. The kit will be made available and announced to VSI direct customers and customers who purchased through VSI Authorized Resellers.

For more information, please contact or phone +1 978 451 0110.

HPE to Stop Selling VSI OpenVMS Products

As part of its exiting the OpenVMS market, Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE) is ending all sales of new VSI products and support effective June 30, 2019. According to HPE, this decision was made in recognition of the execution capabilities that VSI has achieved to assure long term satisfaction for customers and partners. This along with the fact that sales of HPE older OpenVMS products ended in 2018, confirms that VMS Software, Inc. is the only company where customers can purchase their OpenVMS products to help them modernize their OpenVMS environment.

Since HPE (then HP) announced their plans in 2013 to exit the OpenVMS Operating System by 2020, they have demonstrated a willingness to work with VSI to ensure a smooth transition based on customer requirements and satisfaction. As you can see from the historical information below, both companies have tried to live up to this commitment.

2013 - HPE announces that it is exiting the OpenVMS business by 2020.
2014 - VMS Software, Inc. (VSI) formed in 2014 under the Teracloud Corporation group of companies. VSI located its HQ in Bolton, MA near the original Digital Equipment Corporation Headquarters.
2015 - VSI introduces its first upgraded Integrity license product V8.4-1h1 and its 4 levels of VSI Support.
2016 - VSI introduces three additional Integrity licenses with VSI Support. Also, announces VSI Professional Services & OpenVMS Training.
2017 - VSI introduces two new Alpha licenses to help modernize Alpha systems. (V8.4-2L1 and V8.4-2L2 Performance Build). VSI announces the opening of its Malmo, Sweden facility.
2018 - HPE ends sales of older HPE OpenVMS licenses.
2019 - VSI Announces its latest roadmap for its x-86 products with scheduled V9.2 production release in December 2020.
2019 - HPE will discontinue all resales of VSI OpenVMS effective June 30, 2019

New Integrated Development Environment from VSI

VMS Software, Incorporated (VSI) is pleased to announce the availability of the VSI Integrated Development Environment (or IDE) for VSI OpenVMS versions. VMS IDE is an integrated development environment that enables software developers to quickly and easily develop comprehensive applications for VSI OpenVMS. It is implemented as an extension for Microsoft Visual Studio Code (see, which represents Microsoft’s latest state-of-the-art integrated development environment product. The extension is free and available for download via Microsoft Visual Studio Code Marketplace (

VSI’s IDE will only run with VSI OpenVMS Alpha, Integrity, and eventually x86 products.  It does not require any software to be installed on the OpenVMS system. The initial release (currently available) has limited language support; however, the next release (scheduled for availability at the beginning of July) will include considerably more features, and so on with subsequent releases. The first release is primarily focused on C/C++ application development; the next release will include support for other 3GL languages such as COBOL, Pascal, and FORTRAN; the release after that will include support for Java and related languages.

Several short videos covering various aspects of IDE usage are available on the VSI Training YouTube channel, For more information, please contact

VSI Launches the OpenVMS Training Platform

VMS Software Inc. launched the official OpenVMS training platform site on May 30, 2019. The site describes the self-paced and instructor-led OpenVMS courses offered by VSI and course registration and payment options. Forums and a wiki provide an all-around source of information for old and new members of the OpenVMS community. Head over to our training platform to learn more.

Two self-paced courses are released with the platform: Fundamentals and System Management, with many more to come. Self-paced courses include exclusive training materials – video lectures, selected reading, lab exercises and quizzes – that the students can take advantage of wherever they are, whenever they want for as long as their subscription lasts. The courses are aimed at providing a solid foundation of knowledge about how OpenVMS operates while also offering a lot of fun optional material on OpenVMS tips, tricks and kinks to teach above and beyond what an average OpenVMS user or system manager would know. Access to a training Integrity cluster can also be provided for the duration of the training.

Instructor-led training can be ordered from the new platform. A variety of user, system management, and programming OpenVMS courses are brought to you by VSI certified OpenVMS instructors in many countries of the world including the US, UK, Canada, Western Europe and Russia. Courses can be taught remotely, onsite at your premises, or at VSI's office in Bolton, MA.

The new training platform also provides community resources for anyone interested in OpenVMS: a collection of useful links, a wiki, and a forum. The OpenVMS Wiki consolidates and organizes information about VMS in an easily searchable reference base to which any community member can contribute. The OpenVMS forum is a convenient place for everyone to discuss OpenVMS-related topics. For more details, please e-mail us at

VMS Software, Inc. Announces First Boot on x86 Architecture

OpenVMS First Boot on x86 - 14 May, 2019 2:15 EDT

VMS Software Inc. (VSI) is extremely pleased to announce OpenVMS First Boot on the x86 architecture. It has been a long journey and we are now moving rapidly to the V9.0 Early Developer Kit and then to full system operation. There is still much more work to do before getting to a full production system for general customer release. With large areas of the operating system's internal capabilities now operational, we are continually bringing up more components to round out the system in preparation for versions V9.1 and V9.2.

OpenVMS on x86 gives customers a path into the future with new versions of the operating system on industry-standard x86 hardware platforms and as a virtual machine guest on those systems. User applications, with extremely few exceptions, will compile, link, and run on x86 systems without modification. For privileged applications, for example device drivers, there will be guidance for interfacing directly with areas of the operating system that have changed.

V9.0 will be for a selected set of customers and partners to get a head start on porting their applications to x86. V9.1 will be a not-for-production release available to all customers and partners. It will not be production quality but will have most of the system's components available for testing. V9.2 will be the first general customer release consisting of the complete operating system and its associated layered products.
