Many OpenVMS environments are still running versions that are past their supported life, often on aging Alpha or Integrity hardware. The systems work, the applications are stable, and the case for change can be hard to make. In this webinar, Kobe Smith, Support Engineer II at VMS Software, described what a current, well-maintained OpenVMS environment looks like, one component at a time. He covered the importance of a usable non-production test environment and how to keep it representative of production. Along with that, backup strategies, verified restores, rollback plans, regular planned maintenance, and risk assessments were all discussed. The goal was to give attendees a clear picture of the risks associated with their current environment and a realistic set of next steps to mitigate those risks. Whether you are evaluating an upgrade, planning a migration to OpenVMS on x86, or simply looking to improve operational resilience, this session will provide practical guidance for moving forward.

With support for Oracle Rdb on OpenVMS Integrity and Alpha coming to an end in 2027, many OpenVMS users will need to start making some challenging decisions regarding the future of their business-critical Oracle Rdb-based applications in order to ensure they can be maintained and fully supported for the many years to come. In particular, many Oracle Rdb users will need to consider their options in terms of moving to a new database platform and the various challenges this might entail. In this webinar, Brett discussed some of the target database options that are available to users, and outlined the tools, services, and partner solutions that VSI and the VSI Application Services team can bring to these projects. The aim of the webinar is to provide users with a clear understanding of the realistic paths forward, the level of effort and risk that might be involved, and how VSI and its partners can help to ensure a smooth and well-supported transition.

We have recently released Update 3 for OpenVMS V9.2-3, and development for version 9.2-4 is well underway. In this webinar Camiel Vanderhoeven, our Chief Architect and Strategist, went over some of the expected features for this release, which include a new TCP/IP kernel and support for iSCSI storage. He also discussed the release planning timeline, cover some of the challenges we're facing, and touch briefly on what's next after version 9.2-4. Audience questions were answered at the end.
