1.  What did VSI & HP announce on July 31, 2014?  - return to Question List

VMS Software, Inc. (VSI) has entered into a license agreement with HP to develop and release future versions of OpenVMS and most OpenVMS layered products (OpenVMS eco-system).

 

2.  How long is the agreement for?  - return to Question List

Perpetual.

 

3.  Can HP license OpenVMS to other parties?  - return to Question List

No, this is a co-exclusive agreement between HP and VSI. VSI will be the only OpenVMS developer and provider going forward.

 

4.  What does this mean for HP OpenVMS customers and others considering OpenVMS?  - return to Question List

Customers can continue with OpenVMS in their mission critical environments on current and future server generations.

 

5.  Will HP continue to sell and support OpenVMS?  - return to Question List

Yes, HP will continue to sell and support current (8.4) and previous versions of OpenVMS according to their published product and service roadmaps. Furthermore, both HP and VSI will sell VSI’s future releases of OpenVMS.

 

6.  What is the differentiation between HP and VSI going forward?  - return to Question List

HP will primarily sell and support current (8.4) and previous versions of OpenVMS. VSI will primarily focus on sales, support and development of future releases of OpenVMS. However, HP will also resell VSI future releases of OpenVMS.

 

7.  What hardware platforms will VSI support?  - return to Question List

VSI’s first new release of OpenVMS will run on the HP Itanium i4 series, Poulson based, servers (rx2800i4, BL8xxi4). In the future, VSI may support other hardware platforms, including X86-based servers. Click here to see the latest roadmap.

No, the VSI OpenVMS product roadmap is independent of the published HP OpenVMS product roadmap. VSI has licensed the right to develop new releases of OpenVMS for current and future hardware platforms, at VSI’s own discretion.

VSI is headquartered in Bolton Massachusetts, USA, just outside of Boston. The company recently licensed the right to develop new versions of the venerable operating system, OpenVMS, beyond OpenVMS version 8.4. OpenVMS is a marquee, high-end server operating system that is still the market leader in server security and uptime.

To take advantage of the rich pool of both OpenVMS and general software technical expertise in the area. The Boston area is home to some of the best universities in the world. VSI may also take advantage of other USA based and overseas partners to assist in developing other components and / or layered products.

For current (8.4) and previous versions of OpenVMS you call HP according to your HP service agreement. For future versions of OpenVMS (post v8.4) you can contact VMS Software Inc., direct by phone or on our Contact page.

 

20. How will VSI license OpenVMS?  - return to Question List

The same as HP OpenVMS 8.4 on current Itanium based systems. It is licensed per socket except for certain layered products that are licensed per concurrent user. A complete product license list will be added to this FAQ shortly.

 

21. What HP OpenVMS licenses can be traded-in for a new VSI OpenVMS license?  - return to Question List

VSI shall provide a list of HP OpenVMS licenses and HP OpenVMS layered products licenses that are eligible for a trade in for new VSI OpenVMS and VSI OpenVMS layered product licenses. A complete list of these trade-ins will be provided shortly.

 

22. Will VSI sell HP servers with OpenVMS factory installed?  - return to Question List

Yes, on all future OpenVMS platforms. If you need a current HP Itanium server, please contact your HP representative.

 

23. In the future, if I order a server from HP, will OpenVMS be factory installed?  - return to Question List

Yes, if you specify factory installed on the order from HP.

 

24. What will happen on the HP published service roadmap when HP ends support for OpenVMS?
  - return to Question List

HP’s agreement with VSI contemplates VSI picking up support for all versions not supported by HP. Contact your HP representative for details on HP’s roadmap.

 

25. Will VSI provide training courses on future versions of OpenVMS?  - return to Question List

Yes, VSI has a complete list of training courses that will be made available soon. HP will also offer OpenVMS training courses to customers. Course schedules and times to be determined.

 

26. What OpenVMS information will VSI have on its web pages for reference?  - return to Question List

VSI will eventually have most OpenVMS related information that is currently available on the HP OpenVMS web site (layout may be different). This includes product information, documentation, whitepapers, references and etc. in addition to new information VSI will generate and publish.
